Sonata Arctica: New Single “Freedom Concept” Celebrates 30th Anniversary

The Finnish power metal veterans mark three decades as a band with a standalone track that won’t appear on their upcoming album.

Sonata Arctica have released a brand-new single titled “Freedom Concept,” arriving as a standalone release to accompany their 30th anniversary celebrations. The track will not be included on the band’s upcoming twelfth studio album, making it an exclusive treat for fans.

Freedom and Responsibility

Frontman Tony Kakko describes the song as an exploration of the concept of freedom, which he says is all too often misunderstood. At its core, it addresses the idea that freedom is inseparable from responsibility and that one’s values and beliefs are not automatically passed on to the next generation. Kakko noted that there is actually something liberating in that realization. The song had been sitting on his desk for a while, and the band decided that this “melodic power metal blast” was the perfect way to accompany their anniversary tour.

Three Decades of Melodic Power Metal

Sonata Arctica’s history stretches back to 1996, when the band was formed in the northern Finnish town of Kemi. Originally known as Tricky Beans, the group only found their path into power metal after renaming themselves Sonata Arctica. Their international breakthrough came in 1999 with the debut album “Ecliptica,” which instantly established the band as a leading force in melodic metal.

Since then, Sonata Arctica have released eleven studio albums, including classics such as “Silence” (2001), “Winterheart’s Guild” (2003), and “Reckoning Night” (2004), along with countless singles, EPs, and several live albums. In Finland, the band achieved gold status multiple times and can look back on a history of sold-out shows around the globe.

Back to the Roots with “Clear Cold Beyond”

After a phase in which the band explored acoustic territory with their two “Acoustic Adventures” albums (2022), the eleventh studio album “Clear Cold Beyond” marked a clear return to power metal roots upon its release in March 2024. Tony Kakko openly acknowledged at the time that the preceding albums had turned out softer than intended and that the band had consciously decided to go heavier and faster again. Released through Atomic Fire Records, the album was celebrated by fans and critics alike as a convincing return to form.

“Freedom Concept” picks up right where that momentum left off, delivering the signature Sonata Arctica blend of driving rhythms, layered keyboards, and infectious melodies.

Anniversary Tour and New Album in the Works

The 30th Anniversary Tour kicked off on January 30, 2026 in Seinajoki and initially took the band across Finland, supported by Royal Sorrow. The rest of the year features numerous festival appearances across Europe, including Epic Fest in Roskilde, Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel, and the Bang Open Air Festival in Balingen, Germany. From September onwards, an extensive Latin American tour follows with stops in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil.

Alongside the busy touring schedule, the band is already working on their twelfth studio album. “Freedom Concept” is deliberately conceived as a standalone piece and will not appear on the upcoming record. Kakko playfully referred to the track as a “special snack between meals.”

Current Lineup

Sonata Arctica currently consist of Tony Kakko (vocals), Elias Viljanen (guitar), Tommy Portimo (drums), Henrik “Henkka” Klingenberg (keyboards), and Pasi Kauppinen (bass).

“Freedom Concept” is available now on all major streaming platforms.
