Gerard Way on a Death Metal Track? Frozen Soul Make It Happen
Texas death metal bulldozers Frozen Soul have released the title track of their third album “No Place of Warmth.” Featured on the song: none other than My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way. A collaboration that sounds absurd on paper but works surprisingly well in practice.
Some news makes you do a double take. Gerard Way, the man behind “Welcome to the Black Parade,” singing on a death metal track? Yes, really. And no, it’s not a joke, not a publicity stunt, and not an early April Fools’ prank.
Frozen Soul, who have been shaking up the scene with their brutally direct death metal since forming in Dallas, Texas in 2018, recruited the MCR frontman for the title track of their upcoming album “No Place of Warmth.” The result: Way enters at the 3:21 mark with blackened, semi-spoken vocals that have absolutely nothing in common with his usual singing style. In the accompanying music video, he portrays a grotesque, hooded figure, adding an extra layer of darkness to the cinematically staged clip.
How Did This Come About?
Vocalist Chad Green explains: the band met Way a few years ago, and a friendship developed. Green knew about Way’s passion for metal and simply asked if he’d be interested in contributing to a Frozen Soul track. Way was immediately on board.
If you think this is a pure PR move, you should take a look at Way’s metal history. Back in 2022, he contributed extreme vocals to the track “Ronin” by Ibaraki, the black metal project of Trivium’s Matt Heafy. The man clearly has a side that goes far beyond the emo pigeonhole many have been trying to push him into for years.
“No Place of Warmth”: The Album
The title track is just the tip of the iceberg. “No Place of Warmth” drops on May 8, 2026 via Century Media Records and marks the band’s third studio album following “Crypt of Ice” (2021) and “Glacial Domination” (2023). The record was tracked over six intense weeks at Random Awesome Studios in Midland, Michigan, helmed by producer Josh Schroeder.
Beyond Way, other notable guests have left their mark on the album: Robb Flynn of Machine Head appears on “Invoke War,” while Devin Swank of Sanguisugabogg contributes to “Dreadnought.” Green emphasizes, however, that all features are rooted in friendships rather than calculated name-dropping: every guest shares the emotions and vision that the respective song is meant to convey.
Thematically, the album revolves around life’s coldness and the choice to either let it consume you or find warmth despite everything. Green describes it as an open letter to the fans.

Bottom Line
The collaboration between Frozen Soul and Gerard Way is more than a curious crossover. It shows that the boundaries between subgenres are becoming increasingly permeable and that musical curiosity knows no genre limits. Whether Way appears as an emo icon, comic book author, or guest musician on a death metal album: the man proves once again that he refuses to be put in a box.
“No Place of Warmth” arrives May 8, 2026 via Century Media Records.
